Network constantly sending out data

edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
Here is my problem, my network from my laptop kepps sending out large ammounts of data and I am not sure why. It does this so much so that when it is connected through a router the outher computers connected can't use the internet either. The thing that get me is that the wireless network on the plaptop works fine, so I dont think it's spyware-I did run a few spyware programs and deleted some anyways- but the wired network still doesnt work. I don't know if I maybe somehow messed up a network connection for just the regular network which would fix it or not. I need the wired because I do not have wireless networking at home and did the wireless as a check to see if there was spyware which I believe would kill both connections. The onther thing is that if I am quick enough, I can log online when the computer first starts up and then it will stop, I believe from too much traffic being sent out.
Any ideas?

Well the only things to send out too much traffic are spyware or a virus take your pick. I suppose it's possible if the nic is bad it could be sending out packet requests to check for the connection but that's pretty unlikely. Are you hooking up wirelessly to the same router that you are hooked up wired too? That could cause a packet loop between the two devices I suppose. Have you tried pulling out the wireless card and connecting wired to see what happens?

Connect to your network through a cable and do netstat -a and see what's being sent and where it's going to. Also somewhere you should have a router along the network that you can tell it to see where traffic is going and that will tell you what your laptop is trying to get to through the wired nic.
