80GB hdd on old win98se pls HELP

edited February 2005 in Hardware
i'm having huge problems getting my computers bios to even notice that i've added an extra hdd, i've added a 80gb haitachi desksar , it's a award bios (2A5IMG09 if thats of any use) i'm attaching it as a slave drive (set up all jumpers correctly) yet still when using fdisk i dont get option 5 to change drive to format (so i'm assuming it's not recognised), system details:

amd 350 (it's a joke)
sis 530/5595 motherboard(? it's the only info i get on it)
master drive is a 4gb running win98se

does it need a bios update?, and where can i get one from? or is there something i'm doing wrong
please please help it's driving me mad!

thanks

that's some pretty old stuff there...i really don't think that mobo will have support for an 80 gig drive considering when the mobo was made the biggest hard drives around were 4 gig drives. i could be wrong but i think your situation is almost like trying to put a hybrid engine in an old Model-T. good luck though!

Time to do a little trouble shooting - first we check to see if the mobo recognizes the driver before we worry about anything else. Some old mobo's are extremely picky when it comes to drives and sizes. They can also be picky about the slave master thing with certain drives.

So check to see if the mobo recoq's the drive when it's set up as master. Then you may have better luck setting it up as Master on the 2nd IDE channel.

    I will add.
It shouldn't need fdisk as brand new.I would connect it a secondary master.
watch for it's details on bootup.Thats what i do.
Then format it.In Windows if you like.
The jumpers are probably factory default master.

New drives come unpartioned, so you will have to add at least one partition with fdisk.

Sorry to say that you wont be able to boost your hard drive on this one. I have worked on several PCs of same bios version. (No available update to take it past the 40Gig mark, mostly unable to get past 4Gb. (Bios commonly used in Compaq machines)

Whats more even though you probably have three slots on the motherboard for RAM, you wont be able to get the bios to recognise anything over 128Mb.

    New Mobo time me thinks.

Solution for the hard drive issue is to get an IDE card, but you will not be able to use it if you have too many items in your machine. (Recent machine fixed had a 32Mb VPU, modem and network card, that was its limit.)
