Very Slow Startup and Shutdown Windows XP
I don't profess to being a computer wizard in fact I am hopeless on them but if someone can help me any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I suspect I have too many programmes starting (and Stopping) How do I find out which programmes should start up and how do I stop the rest.

He clearly said Windows XP
On the program side of things check in start>all programs>startup and see if there is anything you don't need in there. Generally speaking I find most things in there aren't needed.
Next look at your task bar and see how many icons are active beside the time. A lot of those can probably be stopped things like printer programs, quick time, real player, weather channel, etc... Don't need to always be active and load at boot. You can usually get rid of them by right clicking the icon and telling them not to load.
Next is services and for that I'll redirect you to the master.

If it's network issues normaly it's a case of your pc having trouble resolving an IP. If you can set it to a Static IP that will normally speed up the boot time.
The other possibility is the typical one of being plagued by viruses and spy/adware.
I use selective startup.Yes Home or Pro "version" can make a difference as krysst says.
