Artifacts again

I am getting the same artifacts now.
They are similar to the artifacts present when my previous fan died.

Is it memory or core?

I was running mem and core at 301.5 Mhz.
OC'ed with Rage3dTweak

What is the rated speed for 3.3ns ram anyway?
That is the modules on my R9700.

That looks like memory artifacts to me.

    Ooooo... Purrrrrdyyyy artifacts... :D

My guess would be the core. What are you using to cool the card?

Can be both, but i would suspect the memory first. Back it down 10-15 and see.

They appear when I have been playing a while.
And the disappear when I reboot.

I am using my new Zalman ZM80C-HP to cool the card.

Must be the memory since the core will go MUCH further than that without problems. My 9700 did 330 on the memory without artifacts, my 9800 the same :/

I have 3.3ns ram what is the limit on those?
    Unfortunately it is Infinion modules.
They do not OC very well.

EDIT: Baah the limit of 3.3ns ram is 300Mhz.
Guess my ram doesn't like to be pushed further.

    Next question.
Where do I get an OC utillity with a precise setting of 300 Mhz?
Rage3DTweak can be set to either 297 or 301.5 Mhz.

Just use 297. You will never see any difference between 297 and 301 anyway, but i use Omega's driver and even if you uninstall them, the radclocker is still there. Download radclocker.

    It is the principle ;)
It was the mem causing the artifacts.
Mem at 297 core at 320 no problems in Aquamark.
But I cannot say it is stable after one test only.
    Need to test more.

Butt geez that mem is crap, not even one Mhz above spec. :(

Infineon sucks donkey, i know..believe me. However, games and benches depend much more on the core than the memory.

Well I am glad it isn't 3.6ns then I would be screwed.
Good thing you can always OC the core.
And I know that infineon isn't very popular among OC'ers.
    Now I know why.

isn't there an oc program somewhere called redline?
  • edited November 2003
Try Powerstrip. I think you can set the speeds to whatever you want.

    csimon had this to say
isn't there an oc program somewhere called redline?

It's the overclocking utility shipped with Sapphire OEM & Retail cards. :)
    Works well too :)

You could always be unscupulous and just sell your card then buy a new one with better mem on it. I didn't really suggest that.

mtgoat that is a nice suggestion.
Only problem is that I haven't got a whole lot of money at present.
    But it is an option.

Another thing is that I would need to upgrade to at least 9800 Pro.
A Sapphire R9800 Pro is sold for $590.
    That's a hefty price.

    I am back again.
    Now the artifacts reappeared. :(

I am running the Radeon at
    Core 337.5 Mhz.
    Memory 292.5 Mhz.

I know it isn't the memory causing the artifacts.
It has been clocked higher in the past without artifacting.

This time they appeared after more than 1 hour of FIFA 2004.

I ripped my case open and put my hands on the Zalman profile.
It was warm on both sides, the heatpipe was warm as well.
It was a little bit cooler on the backside compared with the front.
The OP1 fan was set to 5V. Maybe that wasn't enough.
I have raised it to 12V now.

I do not have a great deal of airflow in the case.
    Gotta work on that.

I will report back if the artifacts appear one again.
They are getting on my nerves.

Set too high for too long and those artifacts *can* become permanent, I would leave a little more buffer room if I were you.

Odd thing is that it has been running fine for days.
    And suddenly they reappeared.

For example I played Call of Duty for several hours.
    Without any problems whatsoever.
Guess I need to take the card out again, and see if I didn't apply enough AS3.
Needs quite a thick layer when the shim is left intact.

I have seen no trace of the artifacts since I upped the speed on the Zalman fan.

    I guess 5V wasn't enough.
It is now a 12V and I have seen nothing strange.
And I am running at 337.Mhz Core and 292 memory.
So I was lacking some airflow across the HS.
