Hard Drive Noise

I have an IBM Deskstar 41GB 7200rpm HD. I'm building my 4pc's and put this HD in one I'm working on and low and behold it starts this sound... MMMMNNNNiiipppp----MMMMMNNNiiipppp----MMMMNNNiiippp.
Anyone else had a drive make that noise? I think it's fubared!
Tried it in 2 different pc's and get the same noise. Funny thing is..It worked last time it was in a pc. Didn't know they could go bad just sitting around in a static bag in my parts bins.

Does it sound like a yeti?

Seriously, is there any possibility that it was dropped or even heavily bumped while it was in the parts bin? HD are very sensitive to high G accelerations.

I don't think it had any kind of jolt, that I know of.
If it was though, maybe I could knock it on the other side and straighten it out! lol
I've got other drives. Just thought it was a little funny (the noise) and wanted to find out if anyone else has expirienced same. I guess you could say it sounds like a yeti having sex. Little squeals ;)
Think I'll open the casing to see if I can fix it. Couldn't hurt. The drives fubar the way it is now.

I would try to reformat. If still noisey, you got a paperweight.

bc, can't reformat with it doing what it's doing.
ygj, I'm gonna bust it open and get that yeti outta there!
Hoping I can open it --fix it--(let the yeti out) and close it back up.

Ok this is going to sound really retarded but bare with me there is logic. It could be that the drive is over heating and causing the bearing to squeal. So if there is data on it that you want to get off and you are having trouble reading it take it out (still connected) and put a bag of frozen pees (or any other handy vegetable accept broccoli) that should keep the drive cool enough to get a read off it.

I've done it before on some scsi drives in a server that were starting to crap. Mind you if you aren't having read errors grab the data and pitch the drive. Soon as you get noise that's either bearings or heads going.
