How much does a good video card really make. I mean does it really make a difference in performance? A difference in screen quality? Does it Merritt hundreds of $$?

It depends. If you play games, or do 3D rendering in realtime, yes.

    If not, no.

I don't play too many games but will be getting into 3d rendering.

Well the actual rendering has very little to do with the video card. REALTIME rendering does. The 6800 GT you have in your sig is pretty much the top of the line consumer video card right now, so what else are you looking for? If you don't game, you have way too much video card there.

I mean, if you are talking about doing REAL TIME 3D rendering, such as for video effects for broadcast or something, then you are talking about 4-5 figure video cards... If not, what you have is pretty much the best you can get right now.

It does make a major difference if you do any sort of gaming me and my friend hooked our comps together and played halo 1v1. His comp made the game look like crap but with my eVGA 5600 ultra the game looked awesome. We were fighting over who would use my comp. I paid about 140 for it a couple of months back

Noooooooooo, 4-5 figures? The new stuff ie: PCIe, SLI is worth the $$$.

We're talking about different things here. You're talking about gaming and consumer cards. I happened to mention professional workstation 3D cards such as the 3DLabs Wildcat Realizm 800, which as you can see is not for gamers or computer enthusiasts.

If you have a 6800 GT, you are good to go. You already HAVE a big, bad vid card.
