Monitor not supported by Video card

edited March 2005 in Hardware
Hi,

I recently purchased new parts for a new computer:
Video Card: PCI Express 16x Ati X700pro by Ati
Motherboard: Abit AN8
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
RAM: Muskin PC3200 1GB (2x512mb)
Case: Thermaltake with 420w PS

I wanted to use this computer with my existing monitors:
Monitor 1: Proview PRO-720 (17")
Monitor 2: NEC MultiSync 95 (19")

The problem is that in the ATI Catalyst Control Center the NEC monitor is shown as "Not Supported" and the refresh rate is constantly at 60Hz (even if I change it in Windows). Now, there is an option in the Control Center to "Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID)" and I checked that feature and set the maximum resoution and refresh rate to 1024x768 and 85Hz - and only then the Monitor accepts the 85Hz refresh rate.

However, that was not the only problem. During all this time the NEC monitor "blinks" - turns off and on every 2-3 seconds which gets really irritating and distracting, and that goes on forever...

The Proview monitor did not have the refresh rate problem. It is shown as "Supported" in the ATI Control Center and has a good refresh rate(85Hz). However, when the NEC blinks the Proview also follows blinking, although it blinks much faster as if not turning off and on but just a slight blink.

At first I had Windows XP with SP2, but then I tried Windows 2000 with SP4 and the problem did not go away.

Any help/suggestion is appreciated and welcomed!
Thanks,
VG

Can you run your video card at any other refresh rate it sounds like the monitor (NEC) can't handle the 85hz and so it's constantly trying to sinc up which is what's causing the constant refreshing. This over the long run will cause your monitor to burn out almost guarnateed.

Check the specs for your monitor, they should be in the book/cd that came with it or on line and see what refresh rates it can run at.

Well, I am using this monitor with my old computers and actually I have it now on a KVM switch and it works great with other computers, but not this new one.

The biggest refresh rate I set before was 100Hz with 1024x768 resolution and it works great at that resolution on other computers. I think that it is the ATI's fault for not supporting this monitor.

I have posted a request on the ati support page and for now it is being worked on. I will keep this thread up-to-date with the feedback I get from ATI.

    Thanks
