Xbox Live help

edited April 2005 in Science & Tech
Please Help! I am a computer illiterate, who is trying to help my son. I purchased him an XBOX, and XBOX Live. I have DSL, coming into a modem and Linksys Wireless - G WRT54G down stairs, and a desk top with a Linksys PCI adapter WMP54G upstairs. Xbox is also upstairs. I have a crossover cable that I want to go from Xbox, into thr available ethernet port that was existing in the computer. I tried and tried and tried all the ICS things I could find. I’m just not that smart. Is there any way to plug the Xbox into the desk top that is using the PCI card to pick up the DSL signal from downstairs??? Any help is greatly appreciated. I look like a moron to my son! :help:

I believe you have to turn off ics and create a bridged connection between the two network cards on the machine. That whay the lan card passes directly through the wifi card via the bridge. The problem with ICS is that it doesn't properly pass the MAC addressing for the xbox.

Now another way and a much more friendly and efficient way is to get a Wireless Access point for the xbox so it's working by itself. It'll cost about $70 for the hardware but the advantage is you don't have to have the computer on to use it and you'll get a better connection. There is a specific one that Linksys makes just for it called a Wireless Network Game adapter Futureshop and Best Buy will sell them both. Plus then you get to play with more gadgets and more gadgets always = cool.

How do I turn off the ICS? When I looked at 'network conections', there are two. The PCI Card and one that says 'LAN' and cable unplugged. I tried to hightlight both using the Ctrl key, but get the 'To make a network bridge, you must select 2 ....that are not being used by ICS'

Right click the network connection in My Network places, then select properties. Click the Advanced tab, and uncheck Internet Connection Sharing. Once done, click OK, then select the two connections you want to bridge. Right click, then select bridge connections.

OK! Now I have the Network Bridge icon, An internet gateway icon, so I am thinking I did that right. I have the crossover cable plugged into the eathernet card and the Xbox. I even tried turning off windows firewall, and mcafee firewall. When I try to connect the Xbox, I get a 'unable to connect' error message, with the 'check cables' radio box checked. I tried a regular cat 5 cable as well, no luck. What next?
