Basically figure out how much you want to spend and spend it. AMD pricing is pretty linear so the more you spend the better you are going to get as far as the CPU's go. For mother boards I'd recomend something with the NForce3 chipset on it because they have great audio and built in LAN. Video cards are a personal prefrence for me I prefer Nvidia over ATI not because they are neccessarily better performance wise but they just seem to be more stable when it comes to drivers.

As for what card specifically again price is the limit as they scale up fairly linearly I'd recomend something though with at least 128 ram or 256 if you can swing it. For specificd make/models other people on here are more suited then I since I'm not pushing my home rig for a game machine.

Though for my luck at home and at work I've had best success with Asus products all the way around. MSI would be my next choice though l8ly (not me) others have been having issues with the MSI mobo's.

One other issue is SATA vs IDE most boards now come with both so you are fine, but if you are planning on upgrading from an older machine and bringing your drives with you just make sure whatever new board you are getting is compatible. Also if you are going with an NForce chipset you need to match your ram for the best response. So for example 2 256 sticks will work far better then 1 512.

    Amd budget system:

    amd athlon 64 3000+ $140
    512 mb ram $60
    Motherboard priced around $80-$90 dollars
case with at least 3 fans $60
graphics card 6600 leadtek from newegg $109
Hard drives i think youll be using your old ones
optical drives scavenge some old one from your p-3 system

well, hows the AMD Athlon 64 3500 sound?
prolly will get 1 gig of ram

is the 6600 leadtek good for 3d animations? if not, what then?

Hell ya thats a great processor esp. for gamin you can overclock it to hell and it'll still perform. 1 gig of ram is kinda overkill unless you want to spend the money. You dont need that much unless your planning on running a ton of apps at the same time

1gig isn't all the expensive now and if you are doing gaming or any graphic work it's a huge improvement.

1 gig is almost standard for any newer games.
