all those AMD sockets types, socket A, 754, 939, 940...

are they based on the number of pins the cpu has?

    bingo..socket A (462) has 462, 754 has 754 pins, 939 has 940 yada yada..
same on intel side, 370 had 370 pins, 4xx (intel changes sockets too many times to keep track of) had 4xx...etc etc

it's not a question of which is best, certain processors are only compatible with certain sockets. socket A was only for Athlon/Athlon XP and Duron processors. Socket 754 was short lived and supports newer Semprons and Athlon 64. Socket 940 was also shortlived and supported Opteron and Athlon 64 FX procs. Socket 939 is AMDs newest socket (and hopefull staying for awhile) and supports all Athlon 64 procs.
Into socket 370 was only for pentium 3. Socket 423 was for Pentium 4 but quickly replaced with socket 4xx which was changed again and now we have socket T (which isn't really a socket and sucks really really bad).

it may seem like a lame question to ask, but how do AMD/Intel decide on the number of pins to give the cpu?
