Hi everyone, this is my first post, Cheers!

Two PC's in 1 room at moment
(No 1 desktop pc (MUMS) -a7n8x e deluxe dual lan) using the 10/100 nvidia)
(No 2 Notebook Tosh 5200-701 using intel pro 100/s 10/100)
(No 3 Desktop (MINE) using a7n8x deluxe) Non operational at moment, it won't be for a while!
I would like to connect multiple computers in my home via a Belkin 5- 8- port 10/100 Network switch to share files and printers and even access the internet from every computer in the network. Trouble is - my ISP connection is through a supporting NTL Ambit 10mb cable modem, through a usb.sys connection. It does have a cat5e ethernet connection at the back but i don't no how to configure. Cable always provide me with a diff ip address after so long, is this a dynamic ip address? My broadband speed is the 1mbps. I can not afford a Router and do not understand their capabilities that much and what i should look out for. I'd eventually like to roam the net downstairs on my laptop through a pc card. But first i need to make sure the workgroup network always updates in accordane with my ntl ip address changes.

As for your network setup--I'll leave that to the networking members here at our site. I don't want to stear you in the wrong direction.
My network setup is with linksys 10/100 etherfast pci adapters in 3 pc's to my linksys 4port router which goes out through my bellsouth modem.
And windoze xp pro sets it up pretty much automatically.
A router is basically a device (usually small boxes) that connects two different networks. In this case, your private network for your PC's and the public network - the internet.
If you can't obtain a router (they're pretty cheap these days. I think you can find them for around $35-ish. Not sure how much that would be in pounds), you can convert the computer with the modem attached to a router using "Internet Connection Sharing".
To enable Internet Connection Sharing...
1. Click Start -> Control Panel.
2. Open Network Connections.
3. Right-click on your internet connection... it may be listed as your USB modem.
4. Click on the Advanced tab.
5. Check "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." See screenshow below. I reccomend you also enable Internet Connection Firewall.
6. Click OK.
Now connect your other computers to the switch and they should be able to surf the net right away.
