Windows Doesn't Load

Well. I just got back from my friends house after not fixing his computer.

Aparrently, he left his computer on, left for a while and when he came back, his power green LED was on, yet the entire comp and all the fans/power/everything was off.

There's a high wind and rain storm going on right now. He also said that he isn't sure if his surge protector is looking the same.

So then after turning it all off, he restarted and got in Windows. Updated virus definitions and scanned with Norton. Nothing. Then after about 15 mins of being on, Windows restarted suddenly.

Now whenever he turns it on, it gets past the boot screen but when it reaches the login screen (not sure at what point, because they only have one user), the screen goes black and then nothing.

I was able to get into Safe Mode. I tried changing around MSCONFIG stuff, but it had no effect.

The BIOS settings are all normal.

I was able to boot KNOPPIX with no problem, so I don't think it's a hardware failure.

Any ideas?

if u thin it's a OS related problem, some sys file might have got corrupted, u can try to do a repair install, it should fix the problem.

    His words:
Theres a little warning for you if you ever loose a chess game what will happen.

Ok Went to dinner. Left computer on like normal..no programs running...just idle..everything had worked fine at this point. Became increasingly windy during dinner. Returned home to find the a black screen. Monitor on..speakers on. power to everything. COMPUTER power light was on and green...but computer was not ON. No lights..no fan..no noise...dead silence...Attempted to press restart...and power no effect. Looked at surge protector and cords..all in all looked good. Took them all out and pluged in again. Pressed on. Computer starts. Loads normally. I proceed to the internet...while running a virus scan....computer took a noticeably longer time to start programs and open things. Was surfing net..listening to music and about 15 min in..in went to a blue screen with alot of junk..something corrupt..seen it before so no biggy..but i had to restart. Came back...checked firewall logs..looks good..went to max security...did a disk cleanup...took forever to look at..unable to complete..look at programs and memory running...looked ok but lots of system programs were running..some looked new..Could not do a disk clean or defragment to slow to do.. opening files toook time open as well...about 7 min in automatic restart. ..this time it would load to that window screen and then went black. Repeated procedure many time no luck and only black screnn. At this point alex is worrired and calls matt. Many questions as to how this happened..why was it slow..why freeze at windows...and the big one...Why was it off..and what caused someting like that to happen. Every seen power lighj on computer off...So iis this corrupt files...bad programs..hack attempt...virus..Or really bad luck...
A soultion would be most appreciated.

Sounds like the HDD didnt get a chance to be un-mounted by Windows... if you have a copy of Partition Magic 8 boot discs I think you can sort it out. Also, try booting off the windows install CDROM and attempt a repair clean installation.
