Whats the best 16x dvd multi drive out there?

edited May 2005 in Hardware
I have a 4x multi write, which has been very good, but in buying a new one I can refurbish a pc for a good friend. Now I will never get a "sony" , the less drive restrictions the better, any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks :):p

btw anyone know what duel layer actualy does?

Edit: Should I go with plextor or samsung? plexy is the most expensive 8mb cache, samsung the lowest 2mb cache... ermm Im so somewhat confused. grr.

2nd Edit: Is it possible to get a dvd-9 burner ? If so is it possible to get compatible blank dvds? either - or +R..

Plextor makes the best optical burners hands down.

I have personally used this one and can say that it is worth the price. It is SATA. They have an ATA version of this model as well.

    i have this one http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?eUser=&prod_id=TS-H552B%2fWBGH&selTab=Specifications

Dual layer in simple words actually writes one layer of data on the dvd and later another layer of data on the dvd.

Will I get a difference if I choose a sata over ide? or is it just smaller wires , which would be worth spending an extra $15 bucks, almost raising the dvd burner to $200 bucks.

I don't have a dvd writer, BUT I should mention that I have a Samsung CD burner/DVD combo drive which works WONDERS. Look into Samsung, but don't get an oem version, and make sure you get the BOOSTED BUFFER versions, the ones with 8MB instead of 2, they only come as retail and usually cost a couple bucks more than the 2MB equivalent.

I Have NEVER had a coaster come out, no matter how much my computer was doing other stuff, for cds of course.

To add to this, I've heard only great things from these drives, I will say I havn't looked for reviews and opinions much, in not only once, but the few I have seen I remember were raving about them lasting forever and burning well.

I wouldn`t reccomend sata for the reason of upgrading your hard disks. The most pcs have 2 sata ports and some have 4 if you get lucky (like me). Hds benefit from sata a lot as the speed gets increased from 100 or 133 to 150. DVD`s though need a transfer rate of 21.6mb/s if you have 16x dvd burner. DVD`s on IDE Work as udma2, they can get 33mb/s but they can use up to 21.6mb/s. So IDE is more that enough. Sorry if i borred you but i had to explain why stick to IDE.
