Spyhunter spyware remover

edited April 2005 in Science & Tech
Has anyone heard negative comments about Spyhunter? When I searched it on Google and Msn, it seems to be very mixed out there with opinions on this software to remove spyware. It almost seems like there is more than one version with the same name ????? That may sound naive on my part, Im sure in the world of hacks and losers they have thought of that kind of scam..... My point of this is my daughter at College ordered Spyhunter to help with here dorm computer, many people use it and it is constantly under the scourge of spyware junk.... She went to this site: http://www.enigmasoftware.com/spy-hunter/spy-hunter.shtml (BEWARE !!! GOING TO THIS SITE HAS NOT CAUSED ANY PROBLEMS ON MY MACHINE, BUT WHO KNOWS IN THIS WORLD) from recommendations through out the web. She ordered what looked like a reputable product. But when she got it in the mail it doesn't look so reputable. It came in a plain (cheap) cardboard cd holder and the cd has what looks like a homemade label sticker stuck to it. .... On the site it shows a nice box for the software and looks very professional. So, she hasnt had the courage to put it on her computer and try it, and of course, she feels ripped off. Just wondering if anyone in here has seen this sort of thing or heard about this.

If you are paying for any spy ware/pc cleaning software you are getting screwed. I don't know specifically about that program but it's not a new thing. People are always trying to sell unknowing computer people software that they could get for free (and works better) if they just knew where to look.

I would tell her to cut her losses, perhaps try and get her money back. But ultimately she just bought herself a coaster. Using ad-aware, spybot S&D, and/or MicroSofts anti-spy ware software. It's better it's free and there are no mysteries to the quality and legitamcy of the software.

I agree completely. I wish she woud have called me first before deciding to buy anything like that. Being a young aspiring college kid she thinks she knows more than her old-man..... Anyway I though I would put this out here for anyone who searches such a thing. The more information we all have the better.

SpyHunter does look dubious... I think I've run across it on other machines infected with spyware.

Check out the bad reviews SpyHunter as received: http://www.download.com/SpyHunter/3640-2144_4-10374419.html

I would have just stuck to the free products Kryyst mentioned. We could have also assisted with removal.

If you still want to pay, go to http://www.webroot.com/ spy sweeper, supposingly the best spy/adaware remover in the market today. Works very well for me, its like spybot search and destroy and adaware se combined. :)

Well Webroot doesn't work very well. It will quarantine your spyware but then its' still on your computer, nothing can kill the beast of spyware. It's necessary to gut your system out, because the dang beast comes back.

That's not true at all, frantic n moody. Please don't give people bad advice like that.

Spyware can be removed without having to "gut" your system or reinstall it.

If anybody wants to get the most current info on legitimate antispyware apps, as well as ROGUE software, Eric Howes' rogue anti-spyware list is pretty much definitive and up-to-date.
