windows xp installation causes rebooting

edited May 2005 in Science & Tech
my friend's computer is jacked up and he rebooted it and installed a clean copy of xp pro. it would freeze so we opened it up and there was alot of dust....almost like a snow covered landscape * shivers * we cleaned it up and it looks brand new and it doesnt freeze up anymore. BUT and theres the big word. but the screen turns blue for the xp to install the computer restarts before it even gets to do anything. hd is formatted and when it restarts setup says that it will restart. but everytime it gets to that first screen it restarts. whats going on? oh and it would restart like that if it doesnt freeze before we cleaned off all of the dust.

Not really sure what exactly you are doing. Are you trying to do a clean install off the CD and it's crashing just as the CD is starting to be read. Or have you already installed everything and it's doing this reboot process during during the 1st setup boot?

its the second one. its already installed but its rebooting when it gets to the setup screen. like the pointer will show for the mouse but it reboots 3 seconds after it even shows up. i tested the hd on my computer and there seems to be nothing wrong with it....his computer is a compaq presario se 7000us(?) he bought it in 2000 or something like that hes not sure.

Anytime I've had that happen before it was due to a hardware conflict. The majority of those times it was because of a network card or the sound card. If you have actual cards try removing them and seeing if it still happens. If it's all onboard try dissabling them in the bios and see if that makes a difference.
