Thermal Paste AGAIN......what is this stuff..

I just pulled out my 64 3000+ and the heat sink has a grey material on it...i thiought it was a patch that i read on a search...but it like a paste...is this thermal they put on or do i need tostill add more?

    let me put it this way. No thermal paste -> higher cpu temps(way higher) -> burned cpu

    Citrix was being sarcastic what he meant was put it down and back away because you are about to do serious damage.

    You need thermal paste it's what keeps a good contact between the cpu and the heatsink and makes everything work propperly. You need thermal paste on it or you will serioiusly burn out your cpu.

    no...he wasnt being sarcastic....he didnt even post it was an IM...but i can pull it off and add it....What temp should it be running at?

    im not trying to be smart....

    By lettting it be you mean dont add anything to it....

    Also what are the temp levels....low and high....then too high...

    107F (42C) is fine, that is what mine is at under full load. As far as the paste goes...
    YES you need paste, if you wiped it off Put some back on!!

    if you did not wipe it off and your heatsink is firmly on the cpu and your temp is 107F, then as Gnome so eloquantly put it
    put it down and back away

    gotcha...i didnt wipe the grey off...just touched corner thinkin it was a sticker...once figured it wasnt...asked the question...
