Buying a new monitor

edited June 2005 in Hardware
I have some questions.

My current motherboard can only take AGP 4x/8x video cards.

I have a nVidia 420 MX right now.

I am looking to upgrade my video card to accomdate this new Dell monitor.

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?sku=320-4111&c=us&l=en&cs=19&category_id=6198&first=true&page=productlisting.aspx

Any advice on which video card I should get?

Preferably nVidia please.

I am no wizz at monitors, so if anyone knows of a better monitor (same size or larger) that is preferably cheapero r the same price please direct me to it.

That's an awesome LCD. See my previous thread for pix ;) I got mine for $450 tho.

As for video cards, how much are you willing to spend?

Would that video card work with the monitor?

(I might buy a whole new system)

i don't see why you would have to worry about a monitor working with a video card. most video cards come with a DVI converter(if they have a DVI port) and almost all newer cards have a DVI port. even my 9600se has a DVI port.(soon to be replaced by a 6600gt :D)

if you build a new system then that card will suit you perfectly. if you stay with your current system, just get an AGP version of the 6600gt.

I'm just worried about not getting the maximum resolution possible on that monitor with the AGP version.

THat is all I really need to know.

(And if there is a place for a cheaper and better monitor)

i won't worry about that either, 1680x1050 is a breeze for most video cards. now FPS in 3d is a different story. that is why you get a high performance video card, so you can get the most FPS at high resolutions. there is no performance difference from the AGP to PCI-e. right now we are NOT useing all the bandwidth of AGP 8x, let alone PCI-e. the 6600gt is compareable to a 9800xt performance wise. but the 6600gt is better by ~10-15% (this is from most review's i've seen)

this is the 6600gt i recommend. either this one of the Leadtek. if you look at the max resolution, it is way higher than what most monitors can support. my suggestion is if you really want to upgrade, get a A64, the 6600gt, and NF4 motherboard. this will give you a HUGE performace boost. otherwise just get the 6600gt AGP. either way you will notice a big boost in performance.

Great, now I just have to wait for Dell to get the 2405FPW monitor with some rebats and coupons down to $850...

Here's over $100.00 savings on that monitor if you go with someone other than Dell. compuplus.com

I think I'll just wait for a deal with Dell....

I'd go to http://www.techbargains.com/. Scope out the Dell coupons, and when they have ones that knock off $200 or so, go plug it in Dell's website. You can get it a lot cheaper.

Sticking with Dell is what I would reccomend too. I've heard the older revisions of this LCD had some issues, but the newer ones have been corrected.

Ahh, That works. I didn't know Dell had discount coupons for their stuff.
RA, I just thought you were going to buy right away. That's why I looked for a better deal for ya.

I know that the 2005FPW has serious backlightning issues.

WHich is why I decided to get the 2405FPW.

It is probably the largest and best monitor for a PC.

(Other than that 30" Apple Cinema Monster.)

The older revisions had backlighting issues, but now it's just minimal, and what people say just blow it out of proportion. Even with the 2405 you'll get some leakage.
