Weirdest Crossover Networking

edited July 2005 in Science & Tech
got two PCs (mine and lil bros) running windows xp home sp2...
i wanted to do file sharing, and internet sharing...

Set up: My pc (PC1) connects to the internet through dial-up, his pc (PC2) connects to mine through ethernet network card.

here what happens
1) ping -- failed from both pcs
2) windows browsing -- can't see each others pc
3) crossover networking seems to be recognized on both pc windows as the network icon appears at corner when cables are connected and both pcs are on

funny thing is netmeeting works which we currently use for swapping files:
On netmeeting his pc can call mine but i can't call his,
but only on the condition that
-- i have to make a call first to his pc (but won't appear on his netmeeting anyway) while i'm on that call he'll have to make a call to mine. As soon as i cancel my call (to his pc) his call appears on mine and i accept it and off we go on file sharing

below are the ipconfig/all from PC1 (mine) and PC2 (my lil bros)

first all subnets should be 255.255.255.0

Next make sure both PC's are members of the same work group.

The subnets dont have to be 255.255.255.0, but they already are for the network, which is fine.

The only thing I can think of is something that was causing me problems the other day... The XP firewall... Make sure its not running on your LAN connections.

Is the PPP adapter your dial-up modem - I've just never seen one for dial-up called PPP before. But at anyrate I think you have to also bridge the connection between the two cards on PC1

Just noticed one thing, set up the gateway for PC 2, should be 192.168.0.1. You can also put this as your DNS for kicks but Im not sure that its 100% neccessary.

    About the other stuff...

My ISP uses the same subnet, I have DSL using PPPoATM so it acts as a dialup connection too. There must be some reason for it, unless its just the one that most use because its the done thing.

He shouldnt need to bridge anything though. All you should need for this kind of setup are 2 network cards, one LAN connection and then use ICS for the dailup connection.
Its how it works on my machines, though I dont use a crossover cable any more.

thanks guys, i've set the Gateway for PC2 to PC1s LAN IP... what i find very weird is that we can't ping eachothers system but netmeeting seems to work only on the perculiarest condition that i have to make a call to his IP before he calls mine so that the connection can be established...
    i'll try disabling Windows Firewall...

how do i disable the Windows Firewall on LAN only? Seems like it will be disabled for both LAN and WAN ??

Right click your LAN connection, select Properties then hit Advanced. This will disable the firewall that sits between your 2 computers which I would assume, you dont want/need anyway...

thanks rapture, now i've disabled my firewall on the LAN and still no luck...
also i noticed that when i ping the other pc, the packets seems to go across (since i can tell from packet recieved on the LAN status but i the ping result says all packets lost ?? for some reason the other pc won't return packets sent ????
