Screen is Crazy.. Hardware/Software???? Help!

edited October 2005 in Science & Tech
My screen is going crazy. This happens every now and then, but today it has happened four times. I think it software related, it happened when I click on something. Doesn't matter what, it's random. I can be in IE and hit file it happened or in something else. It happened in photoshop and I was able to do a print screen... I highly doubt this to be a cooling problem. Any input I can get will be great.

Could also be that your monitor is going. Try switching to a different resolution and Mhz in your display settings and see if that makes a difference.

Can it be a monitor problem? I did a print screen... It still shows up and it wouldn't if it was the monitor. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks for the help.

The "print screen" has nothing to do with the monitor. The monitor only reads what the video card sends out and displays it. When you "print screen" it just sends the same info that it is curently displayed to the clipboard. It sounds to me as if the monitor isn't displaying the info correctly for whatever reason.

Try what Kryyst says and check the connections.;)

It's not the monitor. Your video card may be overheating or just plain dying. Get a copy of ATITool and do the artifacting stress test.

Guys, like prime said, what hes saying is that this display corruption is captured in his screen print, which proves, the problem is video card based and helps to rule out a monitor problem.

:-) Thats Ok Zuntar, I'll get the ATI tool and test it later... Thanks for the help.

ATI Tool did not find any errors after 30 min of testing. I also updated the vid card drives. The problem still occurs. I don't think the vid card is over heating.

At this point if you've done the drivers and everything's checked out as far as you can. I'd recommed using knoppix or mepis (they are linux off cd os's). They'll be using entirely different software and drivers so it's a good test to narrow down if it's a hardware vs. software issue.

I'll try Knoppix.. That will take a long time to download... :-)

did u try reseating it yet? if so, then i would try an entire driver update on everything; mobo, vid card, bios...everything. also, i don't know if you have another comp around that u could test components in, like the vid card or the monitor. that would be a big help in pin pointing the problem. good luck!
