Internet Explorer 6 SP2 slow browsing

Hello.
My friend's PC is having a problem with IE6, where it takes about 10 seconds for the browser to find and load data from any website it has not visited during the current session. For example, on a fresh boot of Windows XP. I load up IE6, type in www.msn.co.uk it takes about 10 seconds for it to find then retrieve the website content. When it does start to load the page it does so at usual broadband speed. However, from this point on if I just browse around the pages that are within msn.co.uk then the pages load with no 10sec lag (almost instant with broadband). If a page within msn.co.uk has a image that is outside this domain then it will again take 10secs to load content from the outside domain, if the browser has not visted or retrieved content from that domain in the current session. This problem does not occur with Mozilla Firefox, so its not a fault with my connection or networking settings. Stragely, this problem only occurs whenver he is using his Windows XP profile as I have tried signing on as any other registered user on his system and no lag is present when using IE6 on other user accounts.

Any ideas folks? Any thoughts, or solutions welcomed.

Good question. I'm not an expert in this area, but you may want to clean out the profile's cache. Just go to the Internet Explorer options. Delete the cookies and files. Also, reduce the cache size, using the settings button, and bring it down to less than 100 MB. I keep mine at 50. The default size is somewhere in the gigabyte area. That first hit at a sight might be IE trying to hit it's cache first, and then the web.

As a last resort, kill his profile completely and set up a new one. Good luck.

I have already done the clearing of cache and cookies many times, and I have reduced cache size to 50MB. I had thought about setting up another profile - so drastic, but thought I'd ask to see if anyone had a solution. Thanks for those suggestions though.

Haven't heard of a problem like that... but have you tried scanning the computer for spyware?

I'd also reset IE back to its normal defaults by going into the Internet Options and clicking "restore defaults" wherever applicable. Also check if he's using some sort of proxy server.

Before I re-type everything 'what Versello said'.

It's also possible that there is an issue with the MTU settings and it doesn't like the default. If he is connecting through a router usually you can set the MTU size at the router which should be 1492. If you can't set it on a router then you have to edit the registry file for that setting. But normally if that is the problem it should be effecting firefly as well. However it may not be quite as noticeable.

Obviously that should have been Firefox - the the fly part isn't far from the truth. However that's what I get for watching 6 hours of that show on the weekend.

Never mind now. PC broken badly, had to change the motherboard and re-install Windows XP from scratch. Problem gone now!
