Below is an exchange I had online with a Symantic Norton AV 2006 LIVE representative today. My question was, "How come after hitting REPLY to a email, and doing the this to the same person/address after 4 times their email comes in as an attachment?" Needless to say I was not satisfied with their response. they told me to shut down email scanning basically. Anyhow for your reading enjoyment, I offer the following,
START
Kishan: Hi, thank you for contacting Symantec Live Technical Support. My name is Kishan. How may I help you?
BRUCE: I just installed Norton anti virus 2006. When I exchange email with the same person/address by hitting REPLY, after the 4th reply, the emails come back as an attachment to a warning from symantic. This started to happen in the last few days I had Norton AV 2005 also
BRUCE: In the past I could all day long just hit reply, to email the same person
Kishan: I gather that you are not able to send multiple replies to a same person after installing Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2006. Am I correct?
BRUCE: YES, after the 4th time this happens. How do I stop this with out starting a NEW email every 5th time I relpy to the same person/address?
Kishan: Please let me know the list of all Symantec programs installed on your computer. This information can be obtained from the Add/Remove Programs applet of Windows Control Panel. To open the Add/Remove Programs applet window, please refer to the following steps:

1. On the Windows desktop taskbar, click on the Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel Window, double click on the Add/Remove programs applet icon to open the Add/Remove Programs window.

Note: In Windows XP, location of Control Panel may vary in Start menu according to Windows XP theme.
BRUCE: I write to person, he reply back, I REPLY BACK, he replys back,I REPLY BACK, he replys back, I REPLY BACK, NOW HIS REPLYS COME IN AN ATTACHMNET
BRUCE: OK i WILL CHECK
Kishan: Alright
BRUCE: JUST LiveUpdate 3.0 and Norton AV 2006
BRUCE: This message has been processed by Symantec's AntiVirus Technology.

Unknown00000000.data was not scanned for viruses because too many nested levels of files were found.

BRUCE: is what is said in email when attachment thing starts
Kishan: May I know the email client you are using? (like Outlook express)
BRUCE: yes Outlook Express for over 10 years or more
BRUCE: version 6 6.00.2900.2180 sp2
Kishan: Bruce, this issue can happen if NAV email scanning feature is unable to scan all the atachments within a conversation.
Kishan: I suggest that you disable email scannning.
BRUCE: I only have outgoing disabled, disabling incomming would make me vulnerable to incoming virus's?
Kishan: Need not to worry about this as your emails will still be scanned by the Auto protect feature when they are being saved on the hard disk.
BRUCE: OK then, I will give that a try
BRUCE: but why all of a sudden did this happen ?
Kishan: As I said, this can happen if there are multiple email attachments within an attachment when you receive it.
BRUCE: Ok thank you........but not totaly satisfied with direction given,

END

Well if you read this far, do you have any input or reasons why? I will add this started with the last few weeks I also had Norton AV 2005 installed AND it never did this before Jan 10th (give or take)

She's correct that having auto-protect on will still scan the email when it tries to write the the harddrive. It's still a very poor sollution, nor does it actually answer your problem. As to your specific issue, no idea. Try uninstall/re-install typical type stuff. That's a very weird one. Are you only having this happen with one particular contact or every contact? It's possible that if they are replying back and are using AVG that the attached AVG message is some how getting bundled and repeatedly nested into the replies, which is causing this error. But other then that not sure.

Check in your outlook settings, I think there is an option for Reply as Attachment, check to make sure that's not being enabled. But thats just a big grasp since if that's on it'll do it to every email.

Still having same problem, I know its Nortons Auto protect. I'll have to see if on My machine with Mcafee does the same thing. If not, Out with Norton
