Linux Distro Recommendation

hi,

i've decided to get into linux and play around with it! i have no Linux/Unix experience at all. i would like a easy to start with distro which could be something GUI. also its going to be used on my laptop, which is an Acer Inspire 3620:

    Try RedHat/Fedora or w/e they want to call it.

    I've only messed linux on as a server personally, I have used fedora & some freebsd for all the servers i have setup. The very little bit of desktop/day to day stuff i have done has been with gentoo. Sorry I'm not a whole lot of help with linux :/.

    That chooser actually worked pretty good.

    I was matched with Debian, Suse, Ubuntu and Fedora. Now mind you those are the core distro's right now so it's a safe bet that anyone will generally be happy with one of them.

    As for the original poster the more I've been using it the more I'll pimp Ubuntu. Of all the distro's I've played along with it's got the least ammount of those little annoyance that typically throw people off linux. If you do install ubuntu then this is a must http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=138405. This is the 2nd part into making your linux do those things you want it to do.

    The other distro that I'm partial to is Fedora Core 4, the reason I like that one is because for some reason it works better with a couple apps that I've got to use through wine. Something with the way they have the fonts working that they just work better. I've tried pushing those fonts to ubuntu and it's just not quite the same. However that only effects 1 app that I used and it's a work thing and text based. But in all other aspects Fedora pales to Ubuntu. RPM's suck compared to deb packages and the automatic upgrader almost never works propperly. I find having to do things in Fedora over and over again or constantly hunt for missing packages. These are things I never have to do for ubuntu.
