friends comp is sucking

hey guys so basically im posting for my friend because he cant do it w/o the fear of his rig shutting down on him. hes had this computer for about 4 months now and lately when hes on it the monitor would turn black. when he tries to turn it back on the monitor turns on but nothing shows. so far it seems it wont turn on normally for an hour or so. any guess on whats going on?

    Could be the Power Supply is dying, could be that his CPU fan isn't working fast enough and the CPU is overheating and shutting off. Could be the video card is doing the same thing if it's one with a heatsinc and fan. Could be a lot of things.

    But as to where to start. Pull the sides off the case and start it up and visually inspect things. If any fans aren't spinning or they are spinning slowly enough that you can more or less see the blades that's a problem. If that all looks ok, shut it down but leave the sides off. Then disconnect any optical drives and see if it runs any longer.

    Beyond that get diagnostic software for the mobo that measures fan speeds and core temps and check out what they are doing up to the point where it shuts off.
