My roommate and are on a 3mpbs cable connection and using a wired linksys router. Anywho whenever he is dling something (torrent,p2p, ftp, etc.) Our connection just does a nose-dive and is basically useless. This ofcourse has something to do with his computer but what could it be? Do I need to mess with the port configuration? I honestly don't know where to start.

The issue isn't the computer exactly. The issue is that you've got everything full open probably so that whatever you are downloading is saturating your bandwidth. There are a few ways to fix it.

1st and best but not the easiest is to get different firmware for your router that allows you to do traffic shaping. You can specify that specific ports can only use up to X% of your bandwidth and even change that depending on the time of day. If this option sounds foreign to you don't bother.

2nd this is the easiest way and should do what you need - but it depends on the clients you are using to download with. Many bit torrents allow you to change how much bandwidth they can use at any one time, often they even allow you to change that during the day.

to solve the problem just limit your upload speed. When your upload speed is over a specific number then there is not enough upload to sent packets and there you have the poor web browsing.... If lets say your max upload is at 16kb/s limit it at around 8 for the specific program you are using. a good program to use is netlimiter.
I used to have the same problem.

Thanks for the replies guys, I figured it was a port issue. Although If I'm up/dling any thing it does not affect his computer.
