Spam suggestion

Ok the spam from time to time is amusing but it's getting ridiculous.

I suggest creating a welcome forum and before anyone can post or reply in any other forum they must post 1 topic in there before being able to access anywhere else. This should at least keep the spam in one spot since most spam bots make their one post and never come back.

I think I could do that, but Aranyic will have to agree, and most likely be the one to do it.
    Good idea IMHO.

I did see the post, i've been rolling it around in my head the best way to do it.

I'm toying with making a new level of user that would be like a lvl .5, the initial forum would only be visable to them. Once you make a post you get autopromoted to 1.0 user lvl (regular member) and the forum is hidden from regular members (not sure on hiding it yet).

They way I've done it on my board is that anyone even guests can read all the messages in most of the forums (have a few private ones) and then set it so that anyone with a 0 post count can only post into the new user forum. Once you've posted there though you are free to go into any other public forum and post, reply etc...

The problem with that as I see it is that some of these spambots post multiple times. We've had 3-4 posts in different forum areas in the space of a couple of minutes lately at SM. But maybe since you make it to where you can only post in the new user forum for the first post will slow them down on that crap.

Maybe have a 10-15 minute limit before their access is granted to all forums.

It's not a perfect system, but it does depend on the spambot. I know on my board I've had 3 or 4 sign up l8ly and they never actually posted anything. So I'm wondering if they just try to post and if they can't they give up.

I had hoped to make changes/add mods this past weekend. I got distracted by lots of good football games I wanted to watch though. Hoping to do some work on the forums this long weekend some time.

Man... the spam is getting worse every week, especially now that the shopping season is here. I'm deleting posts and users almost every day!

Why dont you put that spam prodector with the letters that you have to write when you register.
Or give some administrative rights such as deleting threats to some reliable people in the forum that login freguently , so when a spam threat the person can delete it. It is not a spam prodection but i least the threats will be deleted much faster.

We delete them much faster then you think, I am usually here about two to five times a day.

Good. I was getting more angry every time I saw them. Hehe. :p

So what we get like 50 spam posts per day or something?
I wonder if there was a competition of which forum would get the most spams in one day, in what place we were going to be

I think I've solved a couple minor issues I had with the database trying to upgrade and install the mod(s). I hope to do some upgrades tomorrow night. It depends what time I get out of work and what else I have to do though.
