STOP: c0000135 {unable to locate component} This application has failed to start

I am having a problem with a Dell machine booting up Windows XP Home. I get the following error:

STOP: c0000135 {unable to locate component} This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I have tried a few things, including a repair installation, but this just goes fine until it reaches winsrv.dll and then reports that it can't copy it.

I have searched all over the place and can't find a solution to this. The windows website basically tells me that it is caused by a program called TV media, installing critical update 885523 or an update to SP2, and nothing else. This cannot be true as NONE of these things have been done on this machine.

Help would be very much appreciated as I'd rather not have to attempt to deal with Dell support :|

Thanks!

Odd that a repair install doesn't fix it, normally that's the sorta problem that repair installs are great at fixing. Have you tried booting up into safe mode?

You could just google what it's looking for, put it on a RW, boot the machine in dos, and put the file in the /windows/ folder and restart it like the rest of the world does.

winsvr is a trojan. I've seen this before.

There's no windows file called winsvr as far as I recall.

Ummmmm well no windows file other then
winsrv.dll (Windows Server Library) - Details

The library file winsrv.dll, is required for windows to operate. If this file is missing or corrupt windows will not boot successfully. It contains a number of critical system components relating to GDI (Graphics Device Interface) and User functions.

winsrv.dll is flagged as a system process and does not appear to be a security risk. However, removing Windows Server Library may adversly impact your system.

The Process Server database currently registers winsrv.dll to Microsoft.

This is part of Microsoft Windows.

But you know it's just a minor one :)

I probably should have read the rest of the thread after the error. I also loked up the wrong filename (winsVR instead of winsRV)

I would recommend a manual expansion of the file from your original installation CD i386 folder to c:\windows\system 32 while booted into the recovery console.

Then boot into safe mode and run the attached script for registering all your DLLs.

I have the exact same problem... windows XP, SP2 installed decades ago, no new software changes. All of a sudden when I reboot I get that same c0000135 error message.

Have you been able to fix it at all??? Please tell me I don't have to reformat my hard drive?

Already tried this, twice in fact, failed both times.

I'm afraid in the end I stuck the hd in my machine, saved some files and formatted it.
