dunno, could be a weird hardware incompatibility or could be a bad download. Try downloading the alternate version of kubuntu from the same site.

What hardware are you trying to run it on?

What kind of drive is it? Looks like it's not reading the device.

I'm going to remove the old vista rc2 boot loader. See if that helps.

Well I tried but its asking me for some kind of admin password. I removed my system password before hand.

I would recommend Ubuntu as well. My preference is also for Gnome, but to each his own. Fedora is a decent alternative, I am not sure the KDE version of either because I don't follow it.

What are you using to load the media? I've had problems with it loading off of USB drives. If your hanging at the boot screen it's likely to be from the CD source and not the install drive.

I have piles of CD drives from different era's. You would be surprised on how many basic components conflict with different versions of hardware. For example, I have a new(ish) HP 1u server that will only work with CD rom drives out of one of my PIII's. Anything else locks up after the cd is initialized (like at the boot screen)

They have a technical reason for this, but I don't bother to remember anything more than 'this one works' ;)
