windows media player deadfiles

edited May 2007 in Science & Tech
just wondering if anyone here knows how to clear dead or non-existing files of windows media player 11?

i know winamp has this feature which i just love, when i change my file names and stuff, it helps delete dead files and then i just readd them to library...

Just select the entries and hit the delete key. All manual's all I know. Also might wanna tell it to monitor folders. That's how I got it to work with my 360..

Not sure exactly where you are running into the problem but from media player go to tools>options>library>monitor folders and setup your pref's there.

It it's a playlist issue, not sure how to correct it if it's not automatic. But then again I never use media player for that sort of thing.

Ok, thread hijack, and please bear with me........ I like how media player sets up the directories and the thumbnails for my ripped media. I like having access to my files through the "My Music" links, but what I do not like is having all my media files all on my primary hard drive, I would rather they be on one of my storage drives.

This may sound like a newb question, but can I change the directory that windows calls "My Music" to one on another drive? Do you people have a program the helps you keep track of your media files? How about as far as inputing track and artist information?

I use itunes, it does all that you've mentioned and more. Though unless I specifically have my music files in 'my music' they won't show up there, but since I don't bother with that linked folder it's never been an issue. In inputting the artist track when ripping a cd it'll look it up. If it's a manual think I can sellect multiple tracks and fill in the artist, category other information globally but you'd still have to manually give them track names 1 at a time if it can't pick them off the net.

OH which reminds me if you want folders that you have on various drives to show up in your My Music just create a shortcut to it and drop the shortcut into My Music.

Do you have to be subscribed to anything to use itunes? Is it Free?

Itunes it self is free, you get it from the apple site, usually comes with quicktime too. Now if you wanna buy music through it, that's not free. Costs you the price of the song.

Program is free to use and download and you don't have to sign up for anything. If you want you can also create an itunes store account and they have free music you can download, podcasts to subscribe to and other things if you want. But you don't need to do any of it to just use iTunes as a media playing device.
