Mac fans can rejoice as the wait is finally over. <strike>The iPhone is HERE!</strike> The long rumored updates to Apple's MacBook Pro series were released today.

The most notable of all the updates is the new screen that comes with the 15" MBP model. This model now offers a LED-backlit display which is <strike>the industry's first</strike> similar to what Dell announced yesterday for their ultra portable notebook. The new LED display will have the same viewing angle and the same brightness (300 vs 300 nits) as the previous CCFL model. So why should we even care? Well, "the LED-backlit display is another step toward completely eliminating mercury from our displays". Oh and Apple claims users will see extra battery life of 30mins to 1hr depending on usage. The 17" MPB display was upgraded to a 1920-by-1200 high-resolution display.

The other major upgrade was the jump to the Santa Rosa chipset. Finally MBP users can max their notebooks out with 4GB of RAM (previously limited at 3GB).

The new MacBook Pro configurations are:
$1999. 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo. 2GB RAM, 120GB HD, 15" LED. GeForce 8600M GT 128MB
$2499. 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo. 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, 15" LED. GeForce 8600M GT 256MB
$2799. 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo. 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, 17". GeForce 8600M GT 256MB

Its interesting to see they went with nvidia.

Considering all the problem's with tigers nvidia drivers ... The most serious being that if you have highmem (3.5GB+) you get random kernel panics.

Hopefully they fix it with 10.5.
