On March 18th, 2007, adware company Zango seemed unaware of what everyone else knows, and filed a lawsuit against PC Tools, makers of the effective and successful Spyware Doctor anti-malware program. The lawsuit posed the theory that Zango was in fact a producer of legitimate and harmless applications that provided value to customers, instead of manufacturing insipid junk that hijacks browsers and ruins Windows installations.
The FTC, having evaluated the case, laughed at Zango all the way to the bank and raked in $3 million in cold, hard greenbacks for public damages, pain and suffering. Despite Zango's request for a temporary injunction to relieve Spyware Doctor's elevated threat label from Zango's products, this too was denied by Judge Coughenour.
