2Wire Modem Defective.

edited June 2007 in Science & Tech
i have a 1701 HG dsl modem from sbc/at&t and this will be the seventh one that i have bought from the company and i dont know why but it seems like i am buying a new one every year. right after the warrenty is up they seem to go out. yesterday morning i was on the internet for a couple hours and then i had to go to work and i cant help but notice that the top light is flashing green and then red and switching back and fourth color to color and then at the same time the bottom two lights are lighting up green and blinking at the same time.. every time i unplug it the blinking gets worse. was at friends house two days ago and theirs was doing the same thing and was only just little year old. and at 75 dollers a piece ... dunno if i should buy onother one from 2Wire... need some help on this one ... thnks in advance.

Dunno of any real issues with those modems, but I am curious if your plugging the power line directly into a wall or through a surge protector.... power surges seems to kill DSL modems like no ones business like other electronic devices, but these seems more so. Another issue... is the phone line plugged DIRECTLY from the modem into a phone jack or into a filter? YOU DO NOT WANT IT PLUGGED INTO A FILTER, can't stress that enough. Is the phone line your using longer than 10-14ft? Are ALL phone line devices in your home using a DSL filter, this includes but not limited to phones, answering machines, satellite dishes, alarm systems, etc...

    DSL is a touchy beast.

    True that.

Never heard of this 2wire company but I don't recommend you buying another.

2wire is just the type of modem some DSL companies are handing out with their service... IE your wardriving and find all those encrypted AP's that are called 2WIRE2567 or 2WIRE8793 and so on....

Fair enough, it's not a brand they use here in the UK then.

Will leave it to one of the American Icrontians (feels good to use that word again) to suggest a suitable replacement!

yess i agree with you.. everything is installed correctly and all... i called sbc.. they said that if i extend ower contract they will send a new one.. but i am not going to extend it just for that.. and then they said that they cant do anything bout it then if we dont extend we will end up just having to buy onother one for 70 plus 20 for shipping... soo i called 2 wire directly and started harrassing those guys over there...but no luck.. anyone know of a better setup that has wireless for less price....??? thnks in advance.

Think if my ISP tried that I'd leave for a new one. Is that a valid option for you?

God I want FIOS so hard. My aunt works for Verizon in Dallas as a FIOS support nerd, and she's played with it. It's lightning fast. God I can't wait until Waco gets it. I'm gonna jump on it so friggin' fast, that my network won't know what hit it..

And if they won't replace your modem during your service, then ban them. I know only two people with DSL, and they hate it so bad, but they can't afford 60 bucks a month for Time Warner's cable. Granted, it is cheaper to use two 15 buck connections through a hotbrick, or four, depending on how much your hotbrick cost, but you still get more bandwidth with cable..And now I'm rambling.
