Toshiba has announced it will install HD DVD drives in every laptop it sells next year. Acer and HP, two supporters of HD DVD, have not yet committed to including it in their systems. Combined, the three companies control about 28% of the system market. Dell is the only top-tier producer to support only Blu-ray.

Ahem. I wonder how long it will take for a dual-mode player laptop to appear (I may have to let my kids inherit that one).

Also, my guess on this is that the laptops will also have to have a different level of technology to do this right. 5400RPM HDs can stutter on Hi-Def videos and many LT FSBs are pretty anemic at 533/667. I think we will only see this on high-end LTs that will have at least 7200RPM HDs, Merom or better CPUs and a likely FSB speed of 800 or better. Otherwise, it may be too difficult to work with the Hi-Def video files.

BTW- HP, Acer + Toshiba are all in the top 5 LT makers with HP pulling away from Dell at #1. There's some clout to this and a dual-mode player may have to be 3rd party? At any rate- with all the frustrations around HiDef- I'm tempted to say "an HDMI port is much cheaper".
