unauthorized password change

edited June 2007 in Spyware & Virus Removal
Hi All!

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but I've posted here about other things before and you all were amazing, and I'm at my wits' end here. Late last week I got an email from yahoo confirming my password change. I haven't changed my password in years - its the same one I've had for probably 10 years now. In order for yahoo to reset the password, I need to send them info such as the original zip code and bday I registered with. Well, I was 14 at the time, and didn't want people to be able to figure that out - so I have no idea what zip code or bday I registered with. I

've accepted the fact that I probably won't be able to ever get back into my yahoo account. I would like to know if there is something that can be scanned/checked on my computer to make sure someone didn't somehow hack in and get the password? All of my other accounts have been fine (knock on wood).

I thank you in advance for your help :) Sorry if this is an inappropriate post for this board.

Meg

    Hi megs

As you have concerns about your passwords I would recommend that (using a known safe computer) you change all passwords etc. for online sites you use. Then do NOT use the suspect computer for online transactions until you are happy it is safe to do so.

To be more or less certain that your computer is clean and free of such malware you should really start over. What I mean is save all your vital data, reformat the hard drive then reinstall all programs & data.

However, if you don't want to go that far then, as a first step to checking out your system, you might like to post a HJT log so we can see if there's any obvious malware.

Download a self-extracting copy of HijackThis from here …….

    http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe

    Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the file hijackthis_sfx.exe file and it will self-extract into its own folder ……

    C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Go to this folder and run the hijackthis.exe file.

From the menu click on "Do a system scan and save a logfile".

Copy and paste the HJT logfile to this thread. More specific removal instructions will follow for any malware revealed.

The log is clean except that the Java is a little out of date.

The trouble is that older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications"…..

      Java6.jpg
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Once you've done that reboot the machine into normal mode.

To look a little deeper than HJT go here ...

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan

... and scan your system with Panda Activescan.

On the site click on the "Scan your PC now" button and let it do its stuff. Let it fix anything it wants to but do NOT buy any programs if prompted to do so.

Please SAVE the scan report and post it here with an update on how your computer is operating now.
