Hardware 3D is off

OK so I installed the proprietary ATi drivers for my X700 Radeon the other day and they worked fine after a bit of tweaking, I wound up having to reinstall ubuntu to get another problem resolved, I somehow screwed up Mozilla so it wouldn't open any more and even removing it and reinstalling did nothing to help.

So now that-that is fixed, I reinstalled the ATi drivers the same way I did before that worked fine, I have it all written down(just not with me at the moment). The drivers said they installed successfully, but the following command says the 3D is working in software mode.
glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: No
So I am trying to get it working again, and everything will be perfect.... I think

Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure I did... gonna try it again when I get home and see if it works then. But I am fairly certain I did at least.

Yeah this time I killed it... now my monitor setup works 100% which is great but direct rendering is still a big NO. But a little different this time...

    rwb@Bear:~$ glxinfo | grep rendering
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
    direct rendering: No

OK something to do with restricted drivers... even though it was enabled, Idisabled and re-enabled it, upon reboot I still have my monitors the way I like and I supposedly have hardware 3D rendering now.

Looking at their FAQ I see this:
Can I run synaptic, apt-get and other software installations alongside Automatix2 while it's running?
    • NO. Please do not attempt to install any other software or run updates while running Automatix2. If you try to do so, Automatix2 will throw an error and exit.

So is it TRUELY worth loosing apt-get and synaptic over? So far these two things have been great for me.

Damn that is so not worth it, atleast in my view. I love apt-get. It saves lives, you know.

Without being blunt - learn to read.

NO. Please do not attempt to install any other software or run updates while running Automatix2.

While you are doing the automatix setup don't run apt-get or synaptic. Or install ANY other software by any means. Once automatix is setup it's business as usual and you are free to do apt-get, synaptic, hack rpm's etc...etc...etc...
