If advanced data recovery is out of your league or that of the person you're trying to help, maybe a more basic approach would be better.
What’re you going to need to save your data? You’ll likely need a screwdriver and a jump drive (aka "flash" or "thumb" drive). If you’ve never opened up your case before, you’ll need a little bravery.

    $5.99 + S&H (which is more than the item cost). Cheapest, most useful tool for getting data off my Laptop hard drive after an accidental file deletion that I have ever bought. $30 is way too much. The enclusure is pretty damn cheap...but all I want was the IDE->USB connection.
