hey guys, i haven't been here for a while, but whenever i really have something i don't know how to fix, i know where to come.

okay, here's the deal: brand new inspiron E1705, running vista home premium. i booted it up for the first time, and before i even got to the desktop i got some sort of blue screen of death, more like a blue screen of heart murmur or something. it let me restart, anyway and i got to the desktop, but there was a problem with the wireless internet, the bluetooth, and the parental controls were all funky. keep in mind, though, the SOUND worked perfectly.

i didn't know what i was doing but i threw in the OS cd and reinstalled (or upgraded? it said) windows and it fixed all that crap. once the internet got to working, i installed the windows updates, which is apparently what did me in. now, i have no sound. or rather "No Audio Output Device is installed," though the sigmatel hd driver is there and i have reinstalled it multiple times. i read somewhere that one of the windows updates did this. i can't figure out what to do, so i figured i'd come to yous guys. does somebody know what's going on and/or what to do? thanks...

There have been a slew of updates for the sigmatel drivers to fix that problem in vista check the dell site for your computer for updated vista drivers.

thanks. i went and got the driver it recommended, but during installation it stops and says "No supported device found." and stops the installation. the computer prompts a restart for new changes, but still there is no sound.

may need to manually delete the device from device manager then reboot the computer. Vista should try and install the driver, cancel it then try installing the new dell one.

Also are you sure you've got the right driver? I know dell frequently will have several different drivers for similar devices listed.

well i tried a different one (there were two audio drivers available for this model of notebook) and it installed, there is no longer the "no audio output device bla bla" message(picture 1), but now the little volume thing with the red X gives me the volume: 0 thing (picture 2) and when i right click on it and select "open volume mixer," it says no audio device is installed. cannot change volume, either.
