hard drive clicking

My removable hard drive was making a clicking sound. It was unrecognizable by the computer. It was not spinning. After freezing, the computer sees the drive, but it says it is unformatted. I really need to recover this data. It was my temporary backup while I reinstalled my main computer. Thanks for any help in advance.

    You might try placing the drive in various orientations (on edge, upside down) and see if it will work.
    It sounds fatal.
    Be easy on it, it is almost dead.
