Lost Sound After Format

edited June 2007 in Science & Tech
Recently formatted my computer and have lost sound apart from an alert beep every now and then.

This same problem happened when I installed the new Hard Drive after my old one died, that time, with help from this forum, I fixed it by running the C-Media sound and turning off my old broken Sound Blaster 16 card.

This time my PC doesn't even recognise C-Media anywhere so I can't turn that on. Anyone got any ideas? Or ideas on how to find the C-Media?

Did you reload the MOBO drivers after the reformat as that should have reinstated the drivers for your Ob sound?

Which drivers should I look for? I didn't keep most of the drivers.

Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM)
VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) (2x)

did you try running windows updates? this might provide the sound drivers you are looking for.

Yep got all the updates, tried finding soundblaster drivers in the past but I suspect my Soundblaster card is just too old. I'll be building a brand new PC at the end of summer so don't fancy buying a new sound card now but just want to get the onboard sound working.

Do you have the driver disk that came with the motherboard? The drivers are on that.

Nope, got the PC five years ago and didn't comprehend how important CDs like that were then. Thanks for the help though guys.

Your motherboard was made by ASUS for TriGem. You might try contacting ASUS tech support with the info you already have and see if they can narrow down the on-board sound chip model. If this works, you can find C-media drivers here: http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/companies/223.htm

What is more, if ASUS tech support can ID your mobo, they should be able to link you to downloadable motherboard drivers for that model if they are still available.

However, I have a concern: Do you have your on-board sound enabled in the BIOS? That is key to getting it recognized in Windows. Drivers will do you no good if the BIOS does not show the hardware as "enabled". Does Device Mgr. show any yellow exclamation marks relative to sound devices? If it does, that tells you the sound chip is being recognized and if you find the right driver, you should be good to go. Relatedly, did you remove your old Sound Blaster card or is it sitting idle in your machine? If it still works, and is not too old, you might find a driver here ( http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/ ) by selecting: Sound Blaster, Others, Archived Products.

Lastly, (and I am on my soapbox now) AVOID Microsoft Updates for ANY sound card related drivers. I have been snakebit that way and others have too (knocking out your sound altogether). Use Microsoft Updates for Microsoft products ONLY. Go to the OEM for driver updates for everything else. GL!

    Creative say,

"The product you have selected has reached the end of its service life. Support for this product is limited to materials available on the Creative Customer Support website before its discontinuation. This may include Knowledge Base solutions, drivers, application updates and product documentation."

And no drivers in the archives.

I'll try what you said with Asus.

    Thanks for the help.

Got bored knowing Asus wouldn't get back to me til tomorrow at the earliest so did a bit of trial and error. The 8738 driver was the most common on that page so tried that, didn't work. So tried the AC97 one cause I reckoned most CMI ones would've been the same.

AC97 one worked! I now have sound :)

    Thanks for the link adarryl.

Samfrantastic MathsPar!! Sometimes when you throw a dart at a dart board, you DO come up a winner! Glad to hear you're in business. BTW, there were only about 10,000 drivers at that link. How did you get so lucky to hit the right one on the 2nd try! Might want to buy a lottery ticket about now.

Haha well I might just do that. Although you'd already linked to the C-Media part of the site with 330 or so drivers then I just filtered XP only ones et voila 57 drivers. Then I noticed most were that 8738 kind so figured trial and error with different types wouldn't do too much harm.

Although if I'd tried Artis then Safeway then another random one before the AC97 guess I would probably have given up thinking I was being stupid!
