gmail hacking

Hi all,

As of today, my gmail account no longer recognised my password - eventhough it remembers it.

Instead of going directly to gmail access like I usually do, I was taken to gmail home page where I was asked for my user name.

After typing it in, my password automtically appeared in it's proper field like so:

************ - except nowadays they use those black circles.

Anyway, it remember my password, but when I submitted the forum, I was told my user name and password didn't match.

I checked about thirty times.

I jumped through numerous hoops, numerous times, and nothing.

Finally, I thought I had found a forum where I could explain my specific complaint to tech support - but it was just a red herring.

I got an auto response that sent me back on the same merrigoround.

Is it possible my gmail has been broken into by a third party?

I have not given my password or account info to anyone.

Secondly, if someone has broken in, is there any way of tracing them?

Online life is becoming very threatening and very scary.

I really appreciate any advice you can offer.

Thank you.

Not much we can do... it is possible to give your password out without telling anyone due to keyloggers, better check any others sites that use passwords such as your bank just to be sure, change the password as well, preferably using a computer you know to be secure(no keyloggers)...

thank you so much for your quick response - with regards to my bank passwords, i don't do any online banking - does that make a difference?

luckily it's a holiday here in canada, so hopefully no damage has been done.

Well if you don't do online banking then no, but maybe online bill pay and stuff? Might wanna do a virus scan, spyeware, adware, etc...

    A good place to start...http://icrontic.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=57

whew, sigh of relief - no online bill pay either, but scanning for viruses is a great idea anyway - i've been bitten before.

    thanks again!

Also count those little stars. Do they match your password spell count? I've accidently punched letters into the password field and it remembered those letters as well. Even so, just try retyping your user name and password from scratch and see how you go.

You might be able to recover/reset your password. https://www.google.com/accounts/ForgotPasswd?service=mail&fpOnly=1&dEM=

Was your password something simple such as a dictionary word or a string of numbers?

Indigoread and jared - Yup, I've jumped through every gmail hoop dozens of times - spent the whole after noon trying to re-set my pass word, trying to write a form that would actually get read by a human being.

They even offer to assist you in reporting abuse, and when you follow those links, no report is generated - you just end up being forced to write a generic email, that gets an auto response.

Hope I didnt' garble this too much, and thanks again for your responses.
