DVD drive - Broken?

I'm building a new PC sometime this summer once I get enough money but will be giving most of my current PC to my family. The DVD drive of my current PC stopped working a few days ago, I put a disc in there and it will sound as if it is trying to load then a couple of green lights here and there then nothing.

Is there a way to diagnose if this is purely hardware running out (PC is about 5 years old) or some sort of software problem?

The DVD drive on my family's current PC works fine so when I'm moving their hard drive on to this one I could also move the DVD drive I guess but obviously the less moving stuff about the better.

If you can boot from CD, it's software. If you can't, it's hardware.
