Trouble with PhotoStitch

I'm trying to use Cannon Photostitch (which came with my Cannon Camera) to create some panoramic photographs from the photos I took on vacation.
Photostitch is giving me some trouble, however.
Any time my final image is significantly wider than the normal panoramic ratio, it seems to screw up the creation of the file.
I've included an example. The first file is what the low-res preview of the merged photos from the Photostitch program. It looks like these 20 photos of the bay at Halifax are going to turn out beautifully.
The second picture is the output file created by the Photostitch program in the 'save' step (or rather a version of it which has been scaled down to a tenth of it's original size, since the actual file is over 10 mg).
I love taking panoramic photos, and this has always been the program I've used to create them from the component photos. It's never done this before, but now it's done it to three of the panoramics that I took in Canada.
I've tried reloading the original photos and repositioning them, and resaving, and I get the same result. The only thing that seems to help is to use fewer original photographs, but this program should be able to handle (and has, before this week handled) as many as 26 original photos in a sequence.
Can anyone tell me what could be going wrong here?

ONLY downfall is that in its trial/free state you cannot save the settings. Takes me 20 seconds to configure it, then I leave it open for the duration of that day's work.

Edit: the only guess I have for your Photostitch program is that there might be an out-of-memory error. I know that's the main reason the 64-bit version Panorama Factory was put forward. What do you think the total resolution of your final image is? Does it work if you make the image with a few less photos? 15 instead of 20 or something?
It did a beautiful job with my 20 photos from Halifax. It didn't just handle the file-size better, it actually made the stitch more fluid. It's not even noticeable at 100% zoom. I'm gonna stitch the rest of the panorams from my trip and put them in a Picasa2 album, so you guys can see the results.
