Wine 0.9.40: Runs windows applications in Linux.

Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix.

Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.

I installed Wine 0.9.40 a couple of days ago and so far it's been working quite nicely. The nasty regressions that made EVE Online unplayable since 0.9.37 have been fixed so maybe now I'll be able to run both Steam/HL2 and EVE on the same machine.

Before taking the time to install and configure Wine, you should definitely visit this site and look up the software you want to use:
    Application Compatibility Database: Wine AppDB

Also, many distributions offer Wine through their package managers. You should definitely check your package manager listings before downloading unmanageable binaries off the web. Using your distribution's package manager will save you a lot of grief when it comes to updating and resolving dependencies especially for software with complicated dependency trees like Wine.

I basically only used Wine to run WoW, ran it nicely... some random glitches, but it never crashed on me.

The biggest stumbler for wine and windows on linux in general is that it still won't do directx. Which means for utils it's usually pretty good but gaming in general doesn't work in wine.

Direct X up to 8 works flawlessly under wine... 8.1 and up on the other hand ....

EVE uses DX9 and works pretty well under Wine though I think it includes redistributable portions of DX9 as part of the install. All of the recent games by Epic run natively (Unreal, Doom, Quake). HL2 and WoW also run alright. What more do you need? I would say that gaming in general does pretty well under Wine with a few notable exceptions.
