Wifi Drivers in Ubuntu

edited July 2007 in Science & Tech
I have a latptop that I'm going to hopefully make a full time switch to ubuntu with, but my only prob is the fact that I can't get a wireless driver to work on it, are they getting any better in general?

Ubuntu picked up my wireless card without a hitch, though there is no on/off that I could find for the radio, but I managed to fix that on my own to an extent. It really depends on what card your using.

I have a Broadcom based wifi card in my laptop (Compaq 2000Z) and it took forever for me to figure out how to get it up and running.

What I can tell you is that the Ubuntu Feisty FAQ guide has a fix for it, worked like a charm - I'll try and hunt down the link for you.

If you're looking for help in real time, I'd recommend hopping on our IRC channel (#icrontic on irc.rizon.net) and trying to hunt down either Drasnor or the_technocrat - both can help you get on your way quickly and easily. Ubuntu has it's own channel as well for the same thing.

I'm gonna have to download feisty (i have an older version), but hopefully wifi drivers won't be such a prob this time, like they have been before.

As a resident linux-snubber, even I can appreciate Feisty's intuitiveness.

I had quite a time of things in Ubuntu (Dapper) when I installed drivers for my broadcom wifi card. It took something called "fwcutter" or something that pulled the firmware out of a Windows driver for the card - apparently Ubuntu has a driver but not the firmware for the card or something along those lines.

It's an unfortunate licensing restraint from broadcom.

Well my 6.06lts cd must be bad or something because it was nice enough to wipe my hdd, then froze on the actual install. I'm downloading 7.04 now and will install it when I'm at work tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Status report: I am pleasantly suprised by the overall awesomeness of Feisty, and my wifi drivers just worked without any extra help!!!! I'm having some problems with video off tvlinks, but I'll get it worked out.
