Internet access gone kaput
I've looked around the site here and haven't found anything similar to my problem here, so I'll post it and see if I can get some help.
Several months ago IE started do something weird: It would launch just fine and load the home page and I could browse normally, but, after a while, it would go to the wrong site. For example, when I clicked a link on MSN or Amazon, it would go to a Google, Yahoo, or some other site's 404 (not found) error page.
Then, a few months later, it would launch OK then it would not go to any site, it just sits there, loading, no error message or anything. I installed Forefox, and it did the same things (worked fine for a while, then went to the wrong web sites, then no where). Opera and OffByOne browsers work OK, but have limited functionality and compatibility.
Also, when I try to restart or shutdown, it says that "XPCOM: Event Handler" is not responding.
I checked my DHCP, DNS and router settings, and checked for malware, and found nothing unusual. I have McAffee anti-virus installed and running, I ran several anti-spyware programs and they haven't found anything. I regularly clean up my hard disk, deleting old files, clearing the cache and old cookies.
The only odd thing I found was when I ran RootKitRevealer: it said that there were a few registry keys that had "embedded nulls". Two of them can be deleted, one of them gives me an error whenever I try to delete it. RootKitRevealer didn't find any unusual files, though.
Any ideas, suggestions or help would be appreciated, I'm about ready to reformat and reinstall. Many thanks!

Everyone else must be as stumped as I am...
Think harder, please?
And, BTW, I made a mistake, the program that stops responding on shutdown is "XPCom:EventReceiver".
Download and run that.
Any other ideas, or will I need to reformat and reinstall?
Yep, I've tried it without the web filter, and it does the same.
Yes, Firefox does the same thing.
Generally if it takes more than a day to fix, I just reformat haha.
And it seems to happen more often when I do a search on Google.
Ideas, please?
The best anti-malware tool is not doing stuff that increases the likelihood of infection in the first place. [not aimed at you, just a public sevice announcement ]
k9filter.exe
Norton anything, etc
Having layers and layers of speed boosters, network monitors, anti-malware detection tools, etc doesn't necessarily increase your level of protection (if 1 AV scanner is good, then 5 must mean 5 times the protection). What all these tools guarantee is that your PC will run slower (sometimes much slower) and increase the odds of having buggy application issues.
If this were my machine I'd uninstall everything but one anti virus app, and 1 anti-spyware app. You don't need anything else, especially if you're behind a router which will act as your firewall from the outside world. If you're worried about outgoing port use, I'd worry more about why you would be worried about that. lol
Try avg free for anti virus and spysweeper for realtime anti-spyware protection (with a decent removal engine too).
What he said.
My kids tend to go to various sites that collect and install junk. After I nuke the hard drive and reinstall, I'm going to put a password on my computer and keep the kids off of it.
Thing is, I get McAffee for free and I need something to check emails from my students for viruses. AVG is free, but has been consistently rated poorly in tests.
I only have 1 AV program, I have Norton for the improved system utilities, and K9filter because of the abundance of CRAP on the internet, and I have a few antispyware programs because no single one of them can catch everything. On the other hand, they've never caught anything extremely dangerous, so I'm probably just kidding myself.
Anyway, I'll do some selective removals this weekend and see what happens. If that doesn't resolve anything, then, next weekend, it's format time.
Thanks for the suggestions, folks.
