Internet Explorer keeps restarting (Windows Vista)

edited July 2007 in Science & Tech
recently updates apple softwares (itune/quicktime) and i downloaded something from a site, can't remember what it was and my antivirus warned me about some bug when installing it... it was suppose to be a activex object 2.07 or something like that... it somehow automatically install antivirus pro that pops up all the time... windows defender warned me to restart the system, so i did so..

when i log into windows (vista) my explorer keeps restarting every 10 seconds or so...

has anyone experience this before?

i'm boot into ubunutu (which i regularly use now adays) to post this from...

    You got pwned, GG.

Stay in ubuntu or install XP over vista.

Also use firefox not internet explorer and disallow everything in IE. (Rase the security bar all the way to the top then go to customize and set everything to disabled).

Also only download quicktime from apples site.

You got infected with a Smitfraud variant called SpyLocked or WinAntiVirus Pro. Use Firefox and be careful what you're clicking on, next time.

    Head to the SVT forum.

    thanks Thrax..

    here's my progress report lol...
i opened task manager (ctrl+alt+esc) and end the explorer.exe

so i'm using my windows vista now without explorer...

i ran my local norton antivirus and it reports nothing, i fired up opera and googled for abit... found out microsoft has its own malicious program remover..

so i fired up IE and run it... it reported a trojan so it cleaned it for me... restarted and still explorer still plays up...

i'll go through the link you provided... i really have to fix this, i don't wanna reinstall... i didn't set any restore point and i'm running dual boot with ubuntu...

    help help help :(

Just follow the guide. The MSRT program is terrible.

yeah followed your guide still no luck... i can't use spyhunter (not free lol) but i ran ccleaner through my registry and it brings up alot of issues...

    there's a few virusprotect pro3.4.lnk

do you think i should let ccleaner fix this or does anyone have a recommended registry and file integrity program that would do a better job?

There's no single program that's going to resolve this for you. You'll just have to google "Remove winantivirus" and follow all the guides you find until they work. That's how it goes these days.

Like I said above... they'll help you with that as well, and fix up any other dregs you may have caught downloading that thing.

I seem to have a similar problem to that of manuleka. After somehow having virus protectpro installed onto my computer my windows (vista) explorer says it has stopped working and then consequentley restarts every few seconds or so. this stops me from being able to do anything on my computer but surf the web. I think I managed rid my comp of this virus protect pro and the trojans that came along with it using SUPER Antispyware but still my windows keeps restarting over and over. Any help will be greatley appreciated.

Sorry found a vista version of ATF

safe mode and restoring to a point from before the infection might be worth a shot?

i though i fixed my problem... but i have an explorer issue now... after running my laptop for a while... all the windows get black sections and my explorer menu (windows menu) bar with the icons get black areas with the icons shifting to either the left or right...

all i need to do to fix this is ctrl+alt+esc and end the explorer process... then run explorer again and its fine....

and from time to time... like after few hours or so, windows explorer restarts... it doesn't happen in a regular basis, but this happens after i run the laptop for say more than 5 hours or so
