Just ordered refurb AIW 9800 pro

edited November 2003 in Hardware
Well, since my Gigabyte 9700 pro's fan packed it in and zorched the gpu a couple of months ago, I finally got around to rma'ing it back to Newegg last time in. While I was out on the rig and away from where I could get email, they sent a reply back giving me a choice of replying in the affirmative for an even swap for the Powercolor 9800 Pro or if I didn't respond in 3 working days, they were going to credit my cc $280. Since I was out and couldn't respond, they gave the cc credit.:bawling:

Anyways, I was looking around in their refurbs and ran across the AIW 9800 Pro for $280.50, so I decided to try it out. I know it will most probably be a bare card with no cables, but I don't have any real use for the tv part of the AIW right now anyways and the cheapest regular 9800 Pro is over $300.

Anyone here bought refurb vid cards from Newegg? If so, how were they? I read the thread that EQ had up about the trash 4200 he sent back; I'm looking for other peep's experiences.:)

One small problem I see is that the AIW has a single square port on the back that has a dongle that offers you the input and outputs including the monitor out so if it doesn't have that dongle you'll have to order one.

I had a 9800 Pro that was great from their refurb's. Never got to play with it much but It seemed to be a good card. It was just the bare card in the original box.

Needed money for one of those unexpected things and it has been kinda tight. So I sold it along with some other stuff and got a 9600 Pro to try (cough) abd replace it. (cough/ choke!!!)

I got a Sapphire 9800 Pro. refurb for $223. It's the one with the 9700 PCB but 9800 chips and memory. I'm having some issues with it, see my thread if you're interested in reading about it. I'm pretty sure i'm going to return it and try a 9800 Pro retail or possibly 9800XT (though i'll feel like a major, major, sucker for paying $450-500 for a videocard when I know in 2 months, it'll be $350-400).

Lag Packet got a 9800 Pro 256MB refurb from newegg and loves it. Took him a complete day to ask me why he was getting 20 min reboots. I figured out that since he has 4 lights, 2 CDRoms, 2 HDD's, a HDD switch box and an old Paly running off a 350 Watt PSU, that he was under powered and needed a new PSU. got a 480 (I forget excatly) and now it works liek a charm!

Seeing so many people nowadays removing HSF's and playing with mods (both hardware and software) and based on my last experience, I don't trust refurbished video cards from NewEgg anymore.

I know for fact that some of these people abused the system (they even brag about it online) and unfortunately, some of us suffer the consecuences.

Well, I got it in this morning and it came bare bones, like I figured. Luckily I still had my DVI/analog converter that came with my defunct 9700 pro, so I went ahead and d/l'ed the cat 3.9's and installed the bugger. I installed the drivers but had forgot to switch it in bios back to 8X AGP from 4X, which I had set when I had put the old GF3 Ti500 in and now it seems to be stuck at 4X AGP, even though I've set it to 8X in bios. I've tried resetting to 8X in the smartgart window in display properties, but it won't switch to 8X when I reboot.:( Also, fast writes are turned off and smartgart won't activate them either.

Aside from my screwup on install, the card seems just fine. No anomolies either on the card itself (evidence of tampering) or any video qualities that look bad. Hopefully this card will stay running well.

Another question, which utility is the best for overclocking with?
