Two months ago, Facebook opened its API to indepedent developers. Since then, applications built exclusively for Facebook have skyrocketed, and the idea of a "MySpace/Facebook killer" vaporized - it's impossible to offer more features than an entire development community.

For an interesting essay on the company's prospects and the effects being felt throughout the industry, <a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_impact_of_facebooks_platform.php">read on</a>.

I hope it never does. Facebook is the only social networking site I use, primarily because it doesn't have all the juvenile crap MySpace and the others have. I like being able to see things clearly without having to look at somebody's fugly background image and seeing a bunch of lame animated gifs while frantically trying to find where they hid the plugin that plays some annoying angsty numetal song from the latest Hot Topic band du jour so I can stop it.
