winlogon

I have a problem which seems like it should be simple but I cannot solve. Windows xp with ntfs file system while doing a virus scan quarentined the winlogon file by mistake windows went to blue screen. Now when I try to start up I get blue screen. windows flash screen comes up cannot boot to safe mode or prompt. Have been trying to get file from quarentine folder back to windows. Have tried many boot floppies and cds none of the having given me the ability to simply copy and rename the file back to where it belongs. some dont recognise the drive at all some do but only allow me to copy the file o another drive. dont have windows cd. install files are on the drive. It is a dell machine I can boot to a dell utility with options to check and fix hardware but not to fix files. Any help would be appreciated if problem is not as simple as I think it should be I can provide more info to anyone who may be able to help. Thank you

Steve

Which Anti-Virus program did you scan with?

I presume you can't boot into Windows at all?

Scanned with AVG which renamed and placed the file in a directory called avgvault when I boot I get the win xp splash screen then it goes away just like a normal boot but when logon screen should come up i get blue screen instead. Same thing happens if I try safe mode

This may be a long shot, but have you tried "Last Known Working Configuration" (or something like that)?

I have tried all of those things no luck the problem is nothing will allow me to take the renamed file and change the name back and place it back in the proper directory I am going to try bartpe next and see if that does the job my biggest problem seems to be the lack of a windows cd with the service packs already on it my cd is original xp and bart will not build with it and i have had no luck slipstreaming the service pack I will keep hacking away until I get it luckily there are plenty of linux cds to run the machine while I continue to try and repair this right now I am using knoppix which is pretty neet. Thanks for the input.
