help with router/internet connection

edited July 2007 in Science & Tech
I am a member of Xbox Live and I have a Netgear Router that is compatible with Xbox Live(i checked online). I also have a computer connected to that router. When I am on Xbox Live, I cannot use the internet at all on the computer. This causes problems for the rest of my family.

I already called Microsoft, Time Warner, and Netgear and they all told me the same thing--forward the xbox live ports. i did that and still nothing.

I had already had xbox live for about 2-3 years already with no problem so its not my internet connection.

Could it be a firewall issue and if it is could someone please tell me how to fix it.

My router is a Netgear Wireless Router- WPN824
(i do not use it as a wireless router btw)

Thanks

My first guess would be that your xbox is having an IP conflict with your computer. Typically your router will have an IP of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 it has the ability to act as a DHCP server, which means if your other devices (the xbox and the computer) are set to receive their IP's via DHCP they'll receive all their network addressing from the router with no conflicts.

However if you have either/both devices set to static IP's and they are the same, for example both devices are set to 192.168.0.50 for example, then you'll have a conflict and only 1 will work. Usually the last one to turn on wins.

you could try changing the starting IP of the lan side of your router. I had a problem with my friend internet connection and some game he was playing and that fixed it. worth a try.

kryst is right, and IP conflict would screw you up, but untill you know this is the issue you might not want to spend too much time going down this road. If the computer is running XP, it will bark at you if there is an IP conflict. Turn on the xbox, then turn on the computer. If, by some strange reason they are both set to the same static IP, the XP computer (and maybe other Op Systems...can't remember) will give you an error.

When Microsoft, Time Warner, and Netgear all tell you it's about port forwarding, I'd listen. Make sure the xbox has a static IP, then forward all to that IP. You might want to move over to the game forum for better help. We're all about IP addresses here. Gamers are always trying to snake their way through routers/firewalls.
