Corrupt XP? Something else?

edited August 2007 in Spyware & Virus Removal
Dear SVR Forum --

I originally posted in your Hot Spots emergency forum, as my IBM Netvista 42 was threatening permanent death. Mtrox redirected me to this forum, in the hopes that you can cure me! I am very appreciative of your help.
Respun

1. My original Hot Spots post: On Saturday, I replaced my wireless mouse batteries and also made an online purchase using a credit card. Since then, a confluence of bad things: 1) AOL spyware has popped up two dozen times to tell me that "Command Services" has been detected and blocked (I have shut off this popup); 2) my computer began randomly shutting itself down and will not restart except in "Last Known Good Configuration"; 3) the system will not let me create a restore point; 4) on restart, I get a Microsoft message that I have recovered from a serious error -- one error report indicated driver issue and a later one say the error report was corrupted; 5) today, I got an AOL spyware scan message saying that my hard disk was too full (5.6 GB free out of a total of 35.8 GB); 6) I tried to run Windows disk error checking tool but it would not work. My computer is under extended hardware warranty (IBM). When I called IBM, they said that my Windows XP had been corrupted and to reinstall XP (and lose all installed programs and saved data).

2. Update since the Hot Spots post. My computer has stopped shutting itself down. All other problems persist, most notably that I can only restart using "Last Known Good Configuration." I removed some unused programs so that now I have 8.51 GB free space on my hard drive. I have followed all of the SVR posting directions except that I have not installed Spyware Blaster, recommended firewall, recommended AV program, and any new Windows updates -- my thinking is that I should wait on these improvements until some much hoped for day when I can reboot normally (not just into "Last Known Good Config").

Hi respun, and apologies for the delay.

Just so you know, I've read your other thread in the Emergency Help forum.

If you could post a new HijackThis log here, that would be great.

My pleasure. Thanks for reading. All fingers have thus far pointed to nasty AOL.

    Thank you for that!

I need to see another log from HijackThis.
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
    • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.
    Two questions:
    1. I am right in saying you no longer use Norton/Symantec? If so, we can fully remove it.
    2. Are you looking to completely remove all of AOL's protection software to see if it is the cause of your problems?

Trogan -- Here's the log that you specified. I do not use Symantec, nor do I use Webroot. I would be happy to get rid of the old AOL spyware and security system, too. I am using Windows Live OneCare. Thanks still and again. Respun

    Hi respun,

To completely remove Norton, download and run the Norton Removal Tool

To remove Webroot Spy Sweeper, do the following...
Open Notepad (Start > Run > type: Notepad > OK)
Copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the Quote Box to Notepad.
    @echo off
    sc stop "WebrootSpySweeperService"
    sc delete "WebrootSpySweeperService"
    exit
    Go to File > Save
Save File name as "FixServices.bat" (including the Quotes). Please save it on your desktop.
Double click FixServices.bat on your Desktop. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Next, find and delete the following Webroot folder in bold:

    C:\Program Files\Webroot

    Now for AOL, hopefully.
Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

America Online (Choose which version to remove)
    AOL Deskbar
    AOL Pictures Tools (version 10.5.0.4)
    AOL Uninstaller

Note: Not sure if you want to keep some of those, but I've listed all AOL related programs above.

    Dear Trogan --

I am cured! Or so I believe at this moment. And the faullt points exclusively to AOL...

For the solution, please read my thread in your Hot Spots, Emergency Help:
    http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64220

I can find posts all over the internet experiencing the same syndrome of maladies: 1) multiple instances of AOL spyware blocking Command Services; 2) only able to restart using Last Known Good Configuration; 3) on restart, a Windows popup message saying that the system has recovered from a serious error; and 4) no ability to use System Restore.

All of my symptoms are gone. Please let me know what you think. Respun

Sounds good. I would still do the steps I provided in my previous post to remove Norton and Spy Sweeper.
